Behind the Scenes

Joe Pezzillo, Passaic County Mosquito Control
Q: What is your department/title?
A: Passaic County Department of Health – Mosquito Control Division/Superintendent
Q: Why is this important to Passaic County residents?
A: The emergence of West Nile virus in Passaic County in 2000  may be the first in a series of exotic diseases imported to our area due to the worldwide increase in tourism and international air travel.  Malaria, Dengue, Chikungunya, and now Zika virus, are but a plane flight away, and public health officials at all levels are becoming increasingly concerned.  As our world continues to shrink, mosquito control in Passaic County will assume a more critical public health function – well beyond its quality of life role.

Q: What does your department/staff do on a daily basis?
A: In our commitment to protecting the health of County residents and the environment, Passaic County Mosquito Control serves the community by reducing the number of nuisance and disease-transmitting mosquitoes throughout Passaic County.  In providing this service, we employ a number of techniques collectively referred to as Integrated Pest Management (IPM).  These methods include public education, water management, biological control (e.g. fish and copepods), and adult mosquito control.

Q: How/Who can benefit from the work of your department?
A: The work that Passaic County Mosquito Control performs provides a benefit to everyone in Passaic County (including residents, tourists, businesses, etc…), and also a benefit to neighboring counties, as well, since mosquitoes pay no attention to boundaries drawn on a map.

Q: What other organizations do you work with?
A: Passaic County Mosquito Control works closely with:
  • the other twenty (20) county mosquito control agencies throughout New Jersey,
  • Office of Mosquito Control Coordination at New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection
  • NJ State Mosquito Control Commission
  • Rutgers University Center for Vector Biology
  • New Jersey Mosquito Control Association
  • Associated Executives of Mosquito Control Work in New Jersey
  • American Mosquito Control Association
  • New Jersey Department of Health
  • local health departments throughout Passaic County
Q: What is the biggest accomplishment you wish to highlight?
A: A noteworthy accomplishment for the division has been our reduced reliance on pesticides over the last decade, as a result of our Integrated Pest Management approach to mosquito control.  The Mosquito Control division has been getting the word out to residents (via presentations to schools, libraries, seniors, health fairs, etc... and also via door-to-door distribution of information) that most mosquito nuisance can be eliminated by practicing the “3 D’s.”
  • DRAIN:  empty out anything holding water on your property (buckets, birdbaths, children’s toys, flower pots, etc…) weekly.
  • DRESS:  Wear long sleeves, long pants, and light-colored, loose-fitting clothing.
  • DEFEND:  Properly apply an approved mosquito repellent such as DEET, picaridin, IR3535, or oil of lemon eucalyptus.

Memorial Pet Bricks
As part of an initiative to honor our K-9s, Passaic County is offering memorial bricks for people to purchase. These bricks are placed in the Pet Memorial Garden, at the foot of the hill by beautiful Lambert's Castle. These bricks will surround our Sheriff's K-9 memorial, for K-9s that retired or fell in the line of duty. The proceeds from these bricks will benefit the Passaic County Sheriff's K-9 unit, and are tax deductible. Bricks are also available for cats, birds, and other pets. Even if you don't have a pet, you can get a brick from your family to show your support for the Sheriff's K-9 unit. Forms for these bricks can be found here
