AISI Releases 2017 Public Policy Agenda
The American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) released its 2017 public policy agenda, which outlines AISI’s pro-manufacturing policy strategies that will shape the upcoming year’s activities. “Our 2017 Public Policy Agenda highlights a concerted effort on behalf of members of the North American steel industry to combat foreign unfair trade practices, create jobs, highlight our innovations and sustainability, and strengthen the manufacturing base,” said Tom Gibson, AISI president and CEO. Marine Transportation Bill
AISI and other industries reliant on marine transportation asked Senate leaders to support S. 168, legislation approved by the Senate Commerce Committee that will establish a single national standard for the treatment of ballast water and other vessel discharge. This legislation has been approved three times in previous Congresses by the U.S. House of Representatives, but has yet to be considered by the full Senate.

Steel Recycling Institute Presented with 20 Year Anniversary Award
Keep America Beautiful (KAB), a nonprofit dedicated to building a clean environment, presented the Steel Recycling Institute (SRI), a business unit of AISI, with a 20th Anniversary Recognition. The award, KAB’s National Award, recognizes organizations the passion, commitment and volunteer efforts of KAB affiliates across the nation. The award was presented at KAB’s National Conference in Washington, D.C. in January.

CFA is Celebrating National Canned Food Month 
February is National Canned Food Month and the Canned Food Alliance (CFA) wants you to share why consumers should “heart” canned foods with this special photo. To kick the celebration off, National Canned Food month was mentioned on The Today Show during a segment that presented deals at local grocery stores and other ways to participate in National Canned Food Month. CFSEI Accepting Entries For 2017 Awards Program Through March 30th
The Cold-Formed Steel Engineers Institute (CFSEI) is accepting entries through March 30, 2017 for its annual awards program, which acknowledges outstanding and innovative cold-formed steel projects and individuals who have advanced the industry through their significant contributions of time and expertise. This year’s awards will be presented in three categories: Design Excellence, Innovative Detail, and Distinguished Service. Winners will be announced at the 2017 CFSEI Expo on May 22-23rd in Dallas-Ft. Worth, Texas.

Infrastructure Investment 
AISI joined key manufacturers and other industry leaders in sending a letter to President Trump calling for new investments in infrastructure funding, and urging him to make restoration and long-term stability of the Highway Trust Fund a priority.  A newly-released report by the Congressional Budget Office estimates that the Highway Trust Fund will see shortfalls in 2021.

SMDI Sponsors Washington and Chicago Auto Shows
SMDI served as the media center sponsor during Public Policy and Media Preview Days at the Washington Auto Show, Jan. 24-26th and was the exclusive sponsor of the “Concept and Technology Garage,” held prior to the Media Preview Days of the Chicago Auto Show on Feb. 8th.  In DC, SMDI representatives discussed steel’s superior performance, value and environmental advantages in creating light, strong and fuel efficient cars, trucks and SUVs; and SMDI’s Dave Anderson, Senior Director of Long Products, participated in a panel discussion during the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) Government/Industry Meeting, to highlight the benefits of lightweighting with steel. In Chicago, SMDI had a display space on the show floor; and Jody Hall, Vice President of Automotive, SMDI, addressed a panel about women in the automotive industry called “What Drives Her,” which was attended by more than 150 media and industry professionals.

AISI Publishes Three New Cold-Formed Steel Framing Research Reports
AISI has published three new cold-formed steel framing research reports: 1) “RP15-3: Advancing Seismic Simulation of Cold-Formed Steel Framed Buildings,” 2) “RP17-1: Experimental Study on System Reliability of Cold-Formed Steel Roof Trusses,” and 3) “RP17-2: Monotonic and Cyclic Response of Single Shear Cold-Formed Steel-to-Steel and Sheathing-to-Steel Connections.” The research looks to increase knowledge on the behavior of cold-formed steel in order to advance design efficiency and ensure safety. New Video is Released on the Benefits of Steel Buried Bridges
The residents of Buchanan County, Iowa have a new, durable and cost-effective steel buried bridge in place to handle traffic from their cars, trucks and heavy farm equipment. The new 200th Street Bridge replaces the original wooden structure built in 1956 and is the subject of a five-minute video produced for the Short Span Steel Bridge Alliance, National Corrugated Steel Pipe Association, and Big R Bridge, which can be viewed at shortspansteelbridges.org.
