GTA and Guest Teacher Welcome Meeting and Induction
This year’s welcome meeting and induction for all part-time teachers in Statistics takes place on Wednesday 5th October at 3pm. Do please note the date and time in your diaries as it is important that you attend. Dr James Abdey and Dr Erik Baurdoux will run the session with Mark Baltovic from the Teaching and Learning Centre (TLC), which should last approximately two hours. This year’s session will include some group sessions and key information about development opportunities.

Refreshments will be provided and you will be paid for attending.

New Teaching Essentials Handbook
There is a new look to the 2016-17 Teaching Essentials: Delivering Engaging Classes handbook. The handbook has been completely revised by Ragvir Sabharwal, 2nd year PhD student in Statistics and has been given a new design. As always, we welcome your feedback on this handbook which we hope will be your first point of reference for information on teaching in the Department of Statistics.

The new handbook will be available at the GTA/Guest Teacher Welcome Meeting and Induction, and from the department’s administration offices. It will also be available online.

TRANING AND DEVELOPMENT
Building student learning through effective feedback
When: 24 October 2016
Providing students with effective feedback is one of the key ways academics can contribute to their learning. This session will discuss best practice in this area, including the role learning technologies can play; include opportunities for attendees to share their own practice; and allow participants to reflect on their feedback skills through a practical exercise.

Encouraging student contributions in small group teaching
When: 8 November 2016
When students speak in seminars and classes, academics can assess their progress, and students develop their understanding and their retention of concepts.  But this invaluable activity is one of the hardest to control or predict. Can particular teaching practices promote useful student contributions? What expectations and understandings do students have? Participants will be able to evaluate some practical approaches, includes scholarly research in the area, and is an opportunity for participants to share their own practice. Any academics involved in small group teaching are welcome to attend. Please register for this course here.

Further information on Teaching and Learning Centre opportunities and support for GTAs and Guest Teachers can be found on their website: lse.ac.uk/tlc/GTAs
