Transition Earth kicked off 2017 with a great event hosted by the Women’s Environmental Network at the San Francisco Department of the Environment.  Building on that, as you'll see below, we have a busy late winter and early spring of upcoming events!

Given the state of the world (see, for example, this recent headline - Humans causing climate to change 170 times faster than natural forces), it’s crucial that we raise our voices in support of a vibrant planet and healthy people. Our work is more important than ever.

Saving Nature with a Stethoscope: The Power of Linking Conservation, Health & Community Empowerment

Transition Earth is hosting a workshop with experts in conservation, health and community development at the 35th Annual Public Interest Environmental Law Conference in Eugene, Oregon (March 2-5).  This free conference brings together thousands of activists, students, and professionals to advance efforts for environmental and social justice.

Our panel will focus on how linking the issues of conservation, health and community development can address the needs of the more than 1.5 billion people living in the world’s biodiversity hotspots — areas of highly-endangered flora and fauna found nowhere else on the planet that lack essential services and are under intense human pressure.

Register here.

When:  March 3rd (panel at 10:05am to 11:20am)
Where: Public Interest Environmental Law Conference, University of Oregon, Eugene, OR

Environmental Youth Forum

Join Transition Earth at the 9th Annual Environmental Youth Forum.  We’ll be engaging with youth and educators at our table, and then we will be leading a short discussion with students (Grades 9-12) after the showing of the documentary FOOTPRINT.  The film “provides a unique window into the real effects of population growth and consumption inequality on the world we live in and the environment.”

Go here for more information and to register.

When: March 8th (FOOTPRINT shows at 12:30pm)
Where: Smith Rafael Film Center at 1118 Fourth Street, San Rafael, CA

Population Connection: Capitol Hill Days

We’ll be participating in Population Connection’s annual event, “designed to empower grassroots activists with the information and skills that they need to become effective citizen lobbyists for international family planning.”  The event is free, but registration is required.  This conference is more important than ever, given the current government’s curtailing of women’s rights both in the U.S. and abroad. We look forward to sharing our experiences!

When: March 24th-27th
Where: JW Marriott, Washington, DC

Transition Earth: Writer’s Corner

Earlier this month we were published in the online magazine ReImagining. One of the magazine’s guiding purposes is, “Re-imagining is a place not so much to find quick answers to find definitive solutions. Rather, it is a place to ask Big Questions, to explore possibilities, and to imagine a new world.”

With that in mind, here’s an excerpt from our article “Confronting Our Growth Obsession Head On”:

Our current way of life is failing people and Earth. We must learn to live within our means and our planetary limits. This calls for rethinking society’s obsession with growth, be it population or economic. It high time that global society recognize resource limits, act together to move past unsustainable levels of economic growth, and respect the rights and well-being of all.

And don't miss the latest article from our youth writer Candela Vázquez Asenjo, "The Consequences of Today, for Tomorrow’s World (Part II)."  She writes, We must liberate ourselves from our old beliefs and start a new path…Altering the current state of rapid population growth, inequality and poverty will require the participation of everyone.

Onward!
