Coming Soon @ CCD!

Despite the all of the emotions, thoughts, and feelings that follow a tragedy such as the mass shooting Orlando, there is still so much to celebrate:
  • Congratulations to the class of 2016 we are honored and proud of the students who are moving on to new places and looking forward to supporting those who stay at Caltech to continue their educational pursuits
  • Loving Day, Saturday June 11th was the 49th year of celebrating the US Supreme Court Case of Loving v Virginia which in 1967 ended the prohibition of interracial marriage. The last law officially prohibiting interracial marriage was repealed in Alabama in 2000. May we celebrate this day in history and raise awareness about multi-racial experiences, challenges, and successes.
  • Juneteenth, Sunday June 19, 2016 Juneteenth is the oldest known celebration commemorating the ending of slavery in the United States.  Read more about it and learn about local Juneteenth celebrations in the area here or global celebrations here
  • The Caltech Center for Diversity would like to wish all those celebrating and/or observing Ramadan, Ramadan Mubarak! To learn more about Ramadan you can begin with this article

Community Announcements

Research Mentor Announcement:

The Caltech Center for Diversity is currently seeking faculty, postdoctoral fellows, and graduate students to serve as research mentors for the 2016 Freshman Summer Research Institute (FSRI). The Freshman Summer Research Institute (FSRI) is designed to introduce incoming underrepresented and/or underserved freshmen students to Caltech's research and math curriculum, culture and college life, and academic and student support services. Participants serve as research assistants at no cost to mentors.

This fully-funded program offers each participant:

  • A 5-week summer research assignment
  • A 4-week opportunity to prepare for Caltech's first year math course
  • Room and board on the Caltech campus
  • Group field trips, excursions, and social activities

FSRI participants have the opportunity to work on a research project and become acquainted with their chosen research mentor, as well as with postdoctoral fellows, graduate students, and undergraduate students who work in Caltech laboratories. As a member of the Caltech research community, FSRI participants attend group meetings, present on their findings, and learn about the ongoing work of their research group.

Mentor Requirements:
  • Must be a current Caltech faculty, postdoctoral fellow or graduate student
  • Must be available for the entire duration of the five week session from July 11, 2016 – August 12, 2016
  • Must agree to monitor students’ work between the hours of 10am and 4pm Mon-Fri
  • Must be willing to work with students from diverse cultural and educational backgrounds

Mentor Responsibilities:
  • Provide guidance and support in the assigned research area
  • Ensure a safe and welcoming learning environment
  • Assist FSRI participants in creating a presentation that they will give at the end of the program detailing their research experience
