Welcome to our new LSE Health newsletter, bringing you regular updates on our activities, research and events. It has been a busy few months with the launch of two new postgraduate programmes, a range of high profile events and publications, and a number of new staff joining. With our new Global Health Initiative set to launch in 2016, we are looking forward to an equally busy year ahead. We look forward to keeping you updated.

New teaching initiatives for 2015

LSE Health staff have joined with the Department of Social Policy to embark on two major new teaching initiatives. The Global Health MSc kicked off in September offering high-quality, integrated courses, designed to equip students with the knowledge and skills needed to excel in the field of global health policy. Due to start in December is the Executive MSc Health Economics, Outcomes and Management in Cardiovascular Sciences. Developed with support from the European Heart Academy of the European Society of Cardiology, the programme provides practicing healthcare professionals with a set of tailored courses in health economics, outcomes research and health care management in cardiovascular sciences.

Medical Innovation Forum

LSE and Imperial College London came together in October to host a joint event on medical innovation. The forum provided a unique opportunity to bring together clinical expertise, technical innovation and scientific thinking to discuss the latest developments in medical innovation, alongside recent challenges and future prospects. The forum was opened by Lord Darzi of Dagenham who emphasised the importance of the collaboration between LSE and Imperial. ▶▶

Advance HTA findings


LSE Health hosted the final conference of a three-year project, led by Dr Panos Kanavos, Principal Investigator, and funded by the European Commission. The Advance-HTA Conference was delivered by a consortium of partner institutions, disseminating project findings, insights and recommendations. There were engaging debates with participants, experts and wider stakeholder communities on the implications for decision-making and resource allocation. ▶▶

LSE collaboration with China

LSE Health has announced a new research collaboration with the School of Public Health at Fudan University, Shanghai, to explore issues of policy reform in China’s developing health-care system. The initial focus will be on research, training and executive education on health policy and management, health technology assessment, pharmaceutical economics, and epidemiology. With China's expanding international role, it is envisaged that LSE and Fudan academics will also work together on pressing challenges in global health. ▶▶

Middle East health policy


In November, LSE Health hosted Dr Arash Rashidian, Director of Iran’s National Institute of Health Research and Professor of Health Policy and Management at Tehran University of Medical Sciences for a public lecture on “Health Research in the Eastern Mediterranean Region.” Dr Rashidian discussed the strategic direction of health care and health policy in the Middle East, with a particular emphasis on Iran. ▶▶

Korea's health system

A transparent system, data analysis and active international cooperation are at the heart of Korea's successes in health system development said Dr Myongsei Sohn, President of the Korean Health Insurance Review and Assessment Centre (HIRA) at a public lecture hosted by LSE Health on 16 November. Dr Sohn explored the lessons learnt from the Korean experience of health system development since the introduction of a universal health insurance scheme in Korea in 1989. A podcast of the talk is now available. ▶▶

Incentive strategies for antibiotic development
Despite the growing threat of antimicrobial resistance, pharmaceutical and biotechnology firms are reluctant to develop novel antibiotics because of a host of market failures. ▶▶
Why the drug development pipeline is not delivering better medicines
New analysis shows that the majority of new medicines entering the market offer few clinical advantages over existing alternatives. ▶▶
How universal is European access to healthcare?
LSE Health research into perceptions of access to health care in Europe is currently ranked third most popular health policy article by Elsevier. ▶▶
Financial incentives trump clinical guidance on hip replacements
Research into hip replacements in England and Scotland suggests that financial incentives are trumping clinical guidance in the uptake of cemented hip replacements. ▶▶

Recent funding awards

 
Abortion service provision
Dr Ernestina Coast and Dr Emily Freeman have been awarded funding from LSE RIIF to develop two research agendas: (i) on conscientious objection to abortion service provision by health professionals and (ii) to understand the barriers to abortion service provision in rural Zambia. This work builds on ESRC/DFID-funded work on the socioeconomic consequences of unsafe abortion in Africa.

Health Economics Policy and Law 10th Anniversary
LSE Health hosted a packed event to mark the 10th anniversary of its journal Health Economics Policy and Law (HEPL). Twelve diverse speakers, including economists, political scientists and lawyers, reflected on what they thought the biggest challenges will be in health care policy over the next ten years. ▶▶

Special Gastein Issue on securing health in Europe
The latest issue of Eurohealth (Vol 21 No 3) focusses on the 2015 European Health Forum Gastein on: Securing health in Europe: balancing priorities, sharing responsibilities. Health leaders including WHO, EU, Austria, and Luxembourg present their views and ideas. The next issue of Eurohealth is due out on the 10 December 2015. ▶▶
