The Press Club of Dallas Newsletter • Truth. Trust. Transparency.

New Members, New Events and New Progress

There’s no question we just witnessed the most divisive presidential campaign in at least a generation, during which voters, candidates and pundits took particular aim at the “mainstream media.”

I’m not exactly sure who all is included under the umbrella of “mainstream media,” but something tells me it probably includes most of the journalists and former journalists who are members of the Press Club of Dallas.

This organization has been around for more than 65 years, supporting journalism in all its forms long before anyone ever dreamed that a proliferation of fake news websites controlled by the Russians could have impacted an American election for president.

So it’s as important now as ever that our members know what the Press Club of Dallas stands for. We exist to promote Truth, Trust and Transparency. We will stand behind the journalists on the front lines in North Texas and beyond who sacrifice personally and professionally to fight for those values.

Our network of journalists and public relations professionals is growing and we are here to serve, through interesting and timely programming, networking and, beginning this spring, the Hugh Aynesworth Excellence in Journalism Awards.

At a time when legitimate journalists are increasingly under direct and indirect attack, it’s important that you know that this organization continues to have your back. Let us know if there is anything else we can do to continue to support you and the fine work you do with decades of history supporting journalism in all its forms.

Scott Goldstein
President, 2016-17
In the beginning of October, our Board joined The Dallas Entrepreneur Center for a unique partnership. Serving as the new venue for our BOD Meetings, the DEC also provides countless opportunities to collaborate and host events with their mentors, members, and thought leaders. Events Calendar

Press Club members and prospective members enjoyed a free happy hour Nov. 18 at The Cedars Backyard. Even with cooler weather, 25 people came out to enjoy the hospitality of Dallas' first shipping container bar on South Lamar. Three new members signed up at the event and received passes to the Alamo Drafthouse Cinema - Cedars: Sherri Tilley and Scott Tilley, who publish an online entertainment guide (, and Kevin Farrell, a freelance journalist who recently moved here from New Orleans.

Special thanks to The Cedars Backyard and The Cedars Social owner Jeffrey Yarbrough for donating the happy hour; to Kelly Kitchens and Alamo Drafthouse Cedars for movie passes; and to Press Club member John “Doc” Strange for photographs - visit our Facebook album to see his photos from the evening.

It was the 35th annual Awards for Excellence luncheon that recognized this year’s recipients of the 2016 Award for Excellence in Community Service. Hugh Aynesworth, Press Club of Dallas board member, was one of 12 people recognized at a special luncheon at the Fairmont Hotel in Dallas.

Others included Margot Perot and Michael Johnson. The awards were presented to those who are deserving of recognition for their generosity of spirit, civic leadership and ability to encourage community-wide participation in a particular phase of the growth of the city.

Cory Smith, Press Club Board Member

Cory Smith anchors NBC 5 News weekend evenings, Saturday at 6 p.m. and 10 p.m. and Sunday at 5 p.m. and 10 p.m. and also reports. He joined the NBC 5 News team in December 2015.

Born and raised in south Oak Cliff, Cory returns home after three years at KSAT 12, the ABC affiliate in San Antonio. One of his proudest moments was helping low-income residents who were forced out of their mobile-home park to receive financial help from the development company that obtained their land.

Gwen Ifill, age 61

Gwen Ifill, a groundbreaking journalist who covered the White House, Congress and national campaigns during three decades for The Washington Post, The New York Times, NBC and, most prominently, PBS, died on Monday at a hospice in Washington. In a distinguished career, Ms. Ifill was in the forefront of a journalism vanguard as a black woman in a field dominated by white men.
PCD has established events throughout the year to excite, educate, and energize the media and PR communities of North Texas.
